his heart would sink a little--
waiting to be lifted again by her re-appearance
or by the mere thought of her.
He could sit and wait forever just to catch a glimpse of her.
It was somewhat ironic.
He had always scoffed when he read novels or
watched movies that depicted a lonesome figure
pining for the return of that one special person he loved.
Yet, here he was.
Like an actor whose scene was marked
by the absence of a leading lady.
Like a lost soul
who drifted around in search of his soul mate.
He knew that being lost
didn't mean not knowing where one was.
He knew that it meant
knowing what he was missing in his life.
And he really missed her.
More than anything.
More than ever.
People always spoke of how only the little things mattered
but he never saw it that way.
He was a “big picture” person.
If there were little things
that went right in the course of the day,
they hardly figured in his memory.
Everything was an overview, a summary, an overshadowing of all things
that would have mattered—however insignificant it seemed.
That was how things were for the longest time.
That was how they would have stayed.
But they did not.
He looked at her and
realized that her smile meant the world to him.
The whole world could come crumbling down
but all he would ever want to save would not be anything else in the world
but the simple memory of her smile.
He prayed hard that her smile would etch itself firmly in his mind.
But he stopped.
He thought.
He smiled.
He realized it then.
There was no need for such a prayer.
Such a beautiful smile needed no effort to be remembered.
It was this one little thing that he would treasure for the rest of his life.
The little things in life did matter and none more so than this beautiful gift—
a little smile packaged in the form of an angel.
*smiles*
